Movie Research: Oppenheimer

Movie Research: Oppenheimer (2023) What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? -  Camera angles -> To convey the emotions of a certain character, many thriller movies tend to use camera angles. For example, in Oppenheimer, we see many scenes in which he is often being haunted by the reality of his creation. The guilt is illustrated by using dutch angles as well as zoom in shots to amplify and emphasize his emotions.  - Editing -> As well as using the camera angles to aid in conveying the overall mood of the character, in the movie we saw a lot of editing being a right hand for the camera angles. Specifically, we saw a lot of fade in/out scenes. In the same scene where we see Oppenheimer being overcome with the guilt he carries by the creation of his weapon, we see how he begins to imagine the power of his bomb in the room he was in. As the camera does a 360º around him, we see him facing a crowd of people facing the brightness of

Movie Research: Five Nights at Freddy's

Movie Research: Five Nights at Freddy's What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? - Plot twists -> To keep the audience from getting bored, it's important to have plot twists to keep them on the edge of their seat. In this movie, a major plot twist was how unexpectedly nice the animatronics were towards Abby despite being made out to be scary. What conventions of the genre did the movie have that you like? - Costumes -> Again, the costumes were definitely a deal breaker for me. I think that the fact that they got real animatronics for this movie makes it so much more cooler. Of course, as much as I'd love to use costumes like these, I don't have the funds for such. What conventions of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you? - Violence -> Despite expecting this movie to have SOME gore and violence in it, I didn't think it was going to be that bad. However, there was a lot of blood used in

Movie research: The Joker

Movie Research: The Joker (2019) What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? Diegetic sound -> In order to create more of a thrilling emotion within the audience, the usage of diegetic sounds can be used. When you amplify these normal sounds of movement, they create a lot of tension and anticipation for what will happen next. I really enjoyed the way diegetic sound was utilized in this movie specifically. Lighting/color design -> As most Thriller movies, The Joker had an overall cold hue to the whole setting. However, what set this movie apart was the way they still decided to incorporate lively colors. For example in the scene where he's at the hospital as a clown to entertain the children- the tone of the setting is much more lighter. They also make the effort to have the Joker wear a red suit with a yellow, a super vibrant color, tie. What conventions of the genre did the movie have that you like? - One thing that I absolu

Genre Decision Blog!

After much consideration about the way I'd like to approach my pitch, I've decided to make my opening sequence a Psychological Thriller. To reiterate, my pitch is "A student is enjoying her day off, but who has been following her?" I believe that the best way to execute an opening sequence that will be fun and interesting would be by making it a Thriller!! It'll be thrilling (pun intended). In any case, if we were asked to make an entire movie to complete our opening sequence, I'd be able to do so best by making my genre Thriller!

Genre Research: Horror

Image
The last genre I decided to do research on was horror! For a really long time, horror movies were my favorite movies to watch because I loved the sense of the adrenaline rushing through my blood. Starting off with the common mis-en-scene seen in these movies, the tone of these movies is going to be more of a blueish cold tone which is the complete opposite of the other genres I researched. However, one thing that stood out to me, and was similar to the previous genres, was the dullness of the color. While this genre mostly uses blueish hues, they do so in a very low-key manner. They do this due to the association of emotions with these color tones. The usage of the blue hues aids in making the movie, in a way, scarier without the audience even knowing it.   On the other hand, they also use more bold types of mis-en-scenes. Especially when it comes to the makeup and costumes. In many horror movies, the utilization of dramatic makeup and costumes are absolutely pivotal to make the movie

Genre Research: Psychological Thriller

While conducting research on psychological thriller, I noticed that they used dutch shots a lot. This stood out to me specifically because of the fact that I LOVEEE dutch shots. Thriller movies use the dutch shots to capture moments of insanity or disorientation of a character. Dutch shots are my favorite because I find them extremely effective in not only capturing the character's disorientation, but also in disorienting the audience. The low usage of this shot is precisely what makes the shot so uncomfortable for the audience; they typically never see dutch shots. I also noted the use of the low angle shot- I saw this angle be used usually when a character was on a power trip; by pointing the camera to "look up" at a character, it conveys a sense of superiority coming from the character.  As for the Mis-en-scene, again, it varies on the plot of the thriller movie. Similar to the makeup used in mystery genre, I generally noted the same amplification of specific features

Genre Research: Mystery

Image
Hey guys!! For today's blog I will be going ahead and doing research on the different kinds of genre movies can come in! I've decided to do this research on 4 different genres starting with Mystery! Here are some things I noted: To create the overall "mysterious effect," I noted that close-ups, extreme close ups, Point of View shots, and over the shoulder shots were used frequently. When it comes to the camera angles, they play an extremely pivotal role in setting the mood for shots. I noted that the use of close ups were used to amplify things- such as the facial expression of characters. They'd typically use the extreme close ups to emphasize a certain object- or in this case, anything to help solve the mystery in question. The Over the Shoulder shots are always my favorite in these kinds of movies due to the intensity they can bring. For example, I remember seeing this shot being used during a shot in which a side character was investigating a murder before fa

My Pitch

Pitch A: A student goes to New York for spring break, but what is lurking in the forest?  Pitch B: A student is enjoying her day off, but who has been following her? Pitch A is more centered around a thriller film in a different state. Overall, the idea of going through with Pitch A sounds extremely fun to do and I hope I can get to do it. Especially due to the fact that there are so many more trees and hills in New York, I feel like I can really make an opening super thrilling with this pitch. The only downside to going through with this pitch is that it would be difficult to film the opening sequence by myself. Though I could have my family help me, it'd still be more of an obstacle for me to produce this.  As for Pitch B, the broadness of the pitch gives me more of an opportunity to have creative liberty. Since I'm not specifying anything more than there being a student, it allows flexibility in creating the opening sequence. For example, if anything were to go wrong and ci

My Group

Image
Hi guys!!! I'm back with another post in relation to my opening sequence!!  Everyone in my class is working on their project in a group, but I'm working alone. To be honest, I had a doctors appointment the day we chose groups and the people I wanted to work with ended up getting into a group LOL. However, I'm not upset at the idea of working alone. Working in a group can get quite complicated sometimes- especially when it comes to conflicting schedules. This being said, despite the workload being a bit bigger, I'm quite satisfied with working alone. I feel that by working alone, I'll be able to really make it my own. I don't necessarily have an issue with working in a group, but they both have their respective pros and cons. Besides, working alone doesn't mean that I can't ask my super awesome friends to help me with certain things!  In addition to having less possible obstacles by working alone, I also get a lot more creative liberty. You see, by worki

Intro Blog (Final Task)

Hi everyone! My name is Eva Lopez and I'm 17 years old! I was born in the United States and have lived in Florida my whole life. I'm fluent in two languages: Spanish and English. I'm currently in my last year of high school and hope to be attending the University of Florida after graduating! I plan on pursuing a career in the medical field. I specifically want to be a pediatrician! I have always loved kids and I work really well with them! However, for the time being, I'm a hostess at a restaurant near the beach. When I'm not at school (or work), I usually spend my time with my family. Occasionally, though, I spend time with my boyfriend! I rarely get to see my boyfriend anymore due to the fact that he's now a freshman at the University of Florida :(. My boyfriend and I have been together for a little over a year now! It's always fun taking a field trip to go see him in Gainesville (despite the fact that I get carsick quite often).   My favorite class at th
