Movie Research: Oppenheimer
Movie Research: Oppenheimer (2023)
What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?
- Camera angles -> To convey the emotions of a certain character, many thriller movies tend to use camera angles. For example, in Oppenheimer, we see many scenes in which he is often being haunted by the reality of his creation. The guilt is illustrated by using dutch angles as well as zoom in shots to amplify and emphasize his emotions.
- Editing -> As well as using the camera angles to aid in conveying the overall mood of the character, in the movie we saw a lot of editing being a right hand for the camera angles. Specifically, we saw a lot of fade in/out scenes. In the same scene where we see Oppenheimer being overcome with the guilt he carries by the creation of his weapon, we see how he begins to imagine the power of his bomb in the room he was in. As the camera does a 360º around him, we see him facing a crowd of people facing the brightness of the nuclear bomb before ultimately being killed by it and then when the camera reaches his frontside again, we see the setting and atmosphere return back to normal. This editing technique allows for the audience to see exactly what is going on inside of Oppenheimer's head. This can come into great use for depicting an internal struggle.
What conventions of the genre did the movie have that you like?
- This movie had so many layers to it and it mixed so many different types of film to make a masterpiece. I especially enjoyed the way Oppenheimer's character was developed in the movie. Of course, it contains some fictional bits to the movie, but the way his attitude towards his creation changes as the movie goes by is absolutely amazing. Especially because we get to see the guilt grow and the way he begins to think of the way it would actually be used to kill people.
What conventions of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
- Too much information -> Thrillers are supposed to be exciting and somewhat easy to keep up with. However, with this movie, I found myself getting lost quite frequently because of how much was going on at the same time. I remember getting extremely lost when they all went to Los Amos because it felt like there was so many undeveloped things already.
