Music Video Conventions

Hi guys!! I hope you guys are all doing well! For my music video, I wanted to talk about the conventions in Alternative R&B. Since the song I chose, "Good Days" by SZA, is Alternative R&B, I looked at songs within the same genre to see if there was a common theme between them all. Not only did I encounter a bunch of new music I enjoyed, I also found a bunch of similarities between the music videos. In all of the Alternative R&B music videos I watched, the theme of "good vibes" was always conveyed somehow. For example, in SZA's music video, she's in a sort of wonderland. She dances and seems to be just enjoying herself in this wonderland. Of course, this could be obvious though since the song's name is "Good Days." Another example of the theme of "good vibes" being expressed is in Steve Lacy's "Bad Habit," in which he appears to be in an empty room just having fun. He dances to himself as he wears some cool sunglasses, a dress shirt, and a tie.

However, not only did I find this particular similarity between music videos of Alternative R&B songs. I also found that alternative r&b songs all have a very catchy rhythm to them. I talked about the catchy rhythm in the background of my selected song and, honestly, I was enjoying every second of the other alternative r&b music videos I watched. Another example of a song that reflects both of these common themes among Alternative R&B music is "EARFQUAKE" by Tyler, the Creator. In the music video for this song, it begins with a quick dialogue depicting a TV host introducing a guest artist. Once Tyler is introduced, he begins being a little stiff but gradually gets more and more comfortable. By the middle of the music video, he is dancing so hard and it looks like he's genuinely having a good time while performing. This song was also extremely catchy and popular on big social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, reflecting the song's overall addicting sound.

All of these music videos have so much in common. They give me so many ideas for my music video!! I really can't wait to start mapping out my ideas. On my next blog, I'll begin my planning for the music video!!

P.S. here's a super popular Alternative R&B song that is another example of both conventions I pointed out! You might know this song! This is "Location" by Khalid.
